Testing for Chloramines and Disinfection Byproducts

By | February 13, 2018

We recently received an email from 'WendyS' asking, "I'd like to make sure I order the appropriate testing kit. I am mostly concerned about the chloramine and byproduct levels in my home from the municipal water supply. Should I get the Waterworks 2 Free & Total Chlorine test kit?"

Thank you for the  question, Wendy!

The WaterWorks 2 product will test for free chlorine and total chlorine simultaneously. Subtracting the free chlorine concentration from the total chlorine concentration will give you the chloramine concentration in your water. This product will NOT detect disinfection byproducts, as detecting those sorts of compounds requires laboratory analysis.

Companies like National Testing Laboratories offer mail-in water testing packages that include tests for DBP's (disinfection byproducts). The City-Check line from National Testing Labs typically includes testing for DBP's.

Why worry about DBP's?

Scientists have determined that disinfection byproducts may pose a health risk to humans after prolonged exposure.  While the science isn't quite ALL there to make officials label DBP's a menacing threat to human health (yet), enough evidence exists to warrant the USEPA and the CDC issuing warnings against overexposure to DBP's and putting maximum allowable limits for DBP's in drinking water.
